Lomi Shell - Interview with Christin Ohmsen

Interview with Christin Ohmsen – Lomi therapist and trainer

How did you find out about LavaShell?

I first came across Pacific Spirit on the internet and liked the name of the company. Pacific Spirit fits very well with the Lomi Lomi massage that I teach. I found the exotic coconut oils on the website and used them for my massage. When LavaShells became available at Pacific Spirit, I had to try them out right away. I called Pacific Spirit and Birgit Matanisiga gave me detailed advice and told me about the shells and their history. I was immediately impressed by the natural shells and find them so beautiful!

How did you come up with the idea of developing the LomiShell and why?

As a Lomi therapist, my challenge was to supplement and partially replace my hands with a massage tool. We therapists often believe that a good massage can only be performed with the hands. So I simply tried it out, taking a shell and combining it with Lomi techniques. The pleasant warmth allowed me to achieve a deep state of relaxation in the guest, before going deeper with massage techniques and empathy.

How was the LomiShell massage received? Were the students sceptical at first?

The LomiShell massage was very well received by my students. At first, they were surprised by the possibility of integrating the self-heating shell into the Lomi massage. They had many questions about combining it with Lomi massage techniques and whether the shells were appropriate for the tradition and origins of Lomi Lomi massage. The students are very enthusiastic because they can incorporate one or two shells individually into their Lomi techniques or massage style. Ultimately, massage – touch – is always something very intimate, something very personal, and the better and more authentic the giver/masseur feels, the more the guest will notice this. The guest is touched on all levels and can thus enter a state of relaxation from which they can draw new strength and joy from within.

Who has already completed the training with you?

My students are self-employed massage therapists, beauticians and people who work in holistic bodywork. I teach in Germany, but also internationally. Wellness hotels and spas are also interested in LomiShell. Either the participants come to me for training, or I teach directly at the spa.

How did you come up with the idea of training people to teach LomiShell?

I have been teaching Lomi Lomi Nui massage for a long time.  I originally started with traditional Lomi  Lomi Nui massage and trained students to teach this massage. I not only developed LomiShell, but also the LOMI LOMI LA` AU method. Some students then decided to learn my LomiShell technique and pass it on. This gives interested parties the opportunity to learn LomiShell here near Hamburg, or in southern Germany.

What do the students who have learned from you say? What benefits have they gained from the training?

My students really enjoyed the training. Through the training, they learned the Lomi massage techniques using shells and were able to add a new massage to their repertoire.
The shells and lava hot stones are authentic tools and easy to use. The warmth is one of the main reasons for using shells and lava hot stones. Students also do not need to invest in expensive equipment, as is the case with conventional hot stone massage. It is always nice to offer your customers something special, and that is definitely the case with LavaShell and lava hot stone massage. I love them, especially the natural shells.
